How to use your Electronic Cigarette

So many people have been switching to electric cigarettes as a way to help them quit smoking, and they’re so easy to use and effective I can see why. Here are a few tips for getting started and handling your new electronic cigarette.

Getting them set up and ready to “smoke” is easy. Your starter package will include everything you need to get going; batteries, cartridges or cartomizers, chargers, e cigarettes, and a carrying case. If not, you’ll need at least a battery, charger, and cartridge to go along with your vaporizer. The cartridge is usually inserted into the part of the e cigarette where you put to your lips. Cartridges are refillable and range from 4-10 cigarettes’ worth of puffs. Next, the e cigarette’s battery will need to be charged, which you can do using a wall charger, car charger, or USB charger with your computer. The battery is usually found in the tip where the light-up simulated “ash” is, or in the opposite side if the battery is removable. Charging a battery takes about an hour, and will last up to 6 hours, depending on the battery. The battery half screws into the half of the e cigarette that contains the cartridge.

When you’d like to take a hit, just press the button on the e cigarette down and hold it while you take a drag on the cartridge end. When you’re done, all you have to do is take your finger off the button, and then resume whenever you feel the need. The battery will cool down instantly, and the e cigarette can be placed safely back in your purse, pocket, or carrying case.

Some e cigarettes use batteries that are activated by breath, removing the necessity for a button, and letting you activate/deactivate the battery by inhaling.

Inhaling an electronic cigarette is a little bit different than a traditional one. Instead of taking short, hard, 2-3 second puffs like you would with a traditional cigarette, e cigarettes are more effective with slower, more controlled puffs of around 5-6 seconds. And instead of sucking down a whole cigarette every time you want a few hits, you can take as many as you feel like without over-doing it or throwing away a half-used smoke.

Cleaning and reusing the cartridges is also easy and quick. Cartomizers come pre-filled, but can be refilled with e liquid, which is extremely cost-effective and available anywhere electric cigarettes are sold (check out for more info). Cartomizers (combination cartridge and atomizer) can be refilled an average of 4 times before they need to be replaced. Clearomizers are available and helpful, because you can see how much fluid you have left without ever having to guess or run out.

Regular cartridges can be refilled by dropping e liquid into the cartridge until it is full. It is recommended to clean the filler material found in some cartridges by running it under hot water until it is restored to it’s natural color (there are a wide variety of filler materials available, but most are bright white). Remove the filler material from the cartridge with a pair of tweezers, rinse, let dry, and replace. This should be done every 3 or 4 refills.

There are many different e cigarettes available on the market right now, so be sure to follow manufacturer directions carefully with all products, hopefully this will get you started on your road to quitting!
